 For 25 years already, Omar Pène has been a brilliant figure of the Senegalese musical scene. Today, along with his group Super Diamono, the singer has become a star for students and Dakar’s suburban youth.
His enormous success is due to the particularity of his voice and his musical style, baptized "afro-feeling"; a savvy mix of Senegal’s own magical musical sounds interwoven with Jazz and Blues. Even more than his music, however, Omar’s personality has made him legendary. His popularity is first owed to his texts, a combination of uncompromising social commentary, tributes, and educational messages. Also, his fans identify with his tumultuous and anti-conformist history; as a child, he ran away from home to live on the streets. The ultimate proof of his influence is the response his philosophy provokes in his supporters, who become activists. Since 1989, through the association AFSUD (Society for the Fans of Super Diamono), many have been working for the amelioration of their fellow citizens’ living conditions.
